We were asked to create these bespoke costume masks for a live performance. They had to be designed with ease of use in mind – the masks could not be too heavy as the actors inside needed to be able to perform easily. We created the animal masks out of fibreglass to keep them lightweight but strong and put fans in the top to keep the actors cool whilst on stage.
To finish the masks we flocked them before airbrushing the animal patterns on to them. The manes were made out of nylon, apart from the lion’s mane which was real horse hair.
The finishing touches of the performance masks were applied using cellulose paint and vinyl.
