Christmas feels like a long way off but we are already putting our festive thinking caps on
The best Christmas creations start early and here at Plunge the festive ideas are already beginning to take shape. With the team sketching, planning and dreaming up this year’s surprises, we’ve been thinking about how brands bring characters to life in ways that capture the public’s imagination
Introducing Cuthbert
Created for Aldi UK in collaboration with Taylor Herring, this leafy legend was our playful take on the supermarket’s much-loved caterpillar cake. Only this time, he was fully festive.
But Cuthbert didn’t start out looking so impressive. He began life as a humble block of polystyrene in our workshop. From there, our team got to work, carving, shaping, painting and experimenting until a giant Cuthbert finally emerged, with all his Christmas trimmings. His body, boots and face were all hand-made, his bright green body carefully painted and wrapped in lush faux box hedging, and his face flocked to give it that extra pop of character.
And those boots? Naturally, they had to be special, so we dressed them in luxurious red velvet for maximum festive flair.
We had an absolute blast making this lovable character. From the first carve to the final flourish, this was one of those builds where creativity, craft and a bit of festive chaos all came together.
And once he was ready for his big moment, Cuthbert hit the road — spreading Christmas cheer around Brighton before making a special festive appearance at Aldi Eastbourne to greet shoppers throughout the season.
Big, bold, festive, and a little bit ridiculous, just how we like it!
Cuthbert's story reminded us just how magical it can be when a big idea comes to life and we're excited to share what the Plunge workshop is working on for this Christmas.
