If you were in Brighton last Saturday, you might have caught a glimpse of what your future holds — courtesy of two giant fortune cats stealing the show in Jubilee Square!

The heart of Brighton came alive with the second annual White Night Festival, an enchanting celebration that took over venues across the city. From artistic installations to captivating performances, the festival made the most of the extra hour gifted by the end of British Summer Time.

As part of this year’s festivities, Plunge was commissioned to craft a mesmerising installation: a pair of giant fortune cats, brought to life in Jubilee Square. This one-of-a-kind creation was conceptualised by talented artists Sam Hewitt and Shardcore, who invited festivalgoers to interact with the cats by asking life’s burning questions.

And the cats didn’t disappoint! In their enigmatic, slightly eerie style, they waved their mechanical arms and dispensed pearls of wisdom, leaving visitors both amused and intrigued.

These colossal felines were brought to life through an intricate combination of artistry and engineering:

Carved Polystyrene Structure: The cats’ forms were meticulously sculpted from polystyrene.

Jesmonite Hard Coating: A durable finish was applied to ensure the cats could withstand curious crowds.

Animatronic Arms: Thanks to Steve Carpenter's radio-controlled mechanisms, the cats’ arm movements added a lifelike—and slightly sinister—touch to their mystique.

The White Night Festival was a roaring success, with the fortune cats standing out as a central attraction. Their unique design and interactive appeal made them a favourite among festivalgoers, cementing their place as a memorable highlight of the event.
