A Shell of a Good Time – Artist Trail Sculptures Take Over Lowestoft

This August, Lowestoft is getting a little wilder with the arrival of some seriously adorable visitors. As part of a vibrant artist trail, 14 fibreglass turtles have taken up residence across the town, ready to be discovered by eagle-eyed explorers.
Commissioned by This is Global, this Artist Trail sculpture project invites visitors to play detective, hunting down these beautifully designed, larger-than-life turtles at various locations. Each sculpture has been uniquely decorated, celebrating Lowestoft’s rich history, with a few surprise designs thrown in for good measure.
How We Made the Turtles Come to Life
Watching these giant turtle sculptures take shape was a real treat. Here’s how we did it:
🔹 First, we modelled a mini turtle in plasticine—sculpting every detail to perfection.
🔹 Then, we scaled up—translating the design into a polystyrene-carved master template.
🔹 Next, the fibreglass magic happened—casting 14 cartoon-like, character-filled turtles from our custom-made mould.
🔹 Finally, each turtle got its own artistic makeover, turning them into unique, eye-catching Artist Trail sculptures.
Wait… Turtles or Tortoises?
We know what you’re thinking—don’t turtles have flippers? Well, here’s a fun fact for you: sea turtles have flippers, but freshwater turtles (like our Lowestoft bunch) have legs. So yes, they may look like tortoises, but we promise—they’re turtles through and through!
